PM Estimates that Myanmar Needs at Least Five Years to Resolve Problem

Belgium: The chair of ASEAN in 2022, Prime Minister Hun Sen, estimates that at least five more years are needed to solve the crisis in Myanmar.

Prime Minister Hun Sen said that this issue is difficult to resolve, and especially now that the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar is no longer able to visit Myanmar.

Speaking at a meeting with Cambodians living in Europe who came to see him on 12 December 2022, in Brussels, Belgium, he said, “I can predict that the crisis in Myanmar will take at least five years [to resolve].”

Cambodia's ASEAN chairmanship will end in about 20 days before passing on to Indonesia. The Prime Minister hopes that the ASEAN chair in 2023 will continue coordination to resolve the Myanmar issue to help return the situation in Myanmar to a peaceful state.

The Cambodian Prime Minister, in his capacity as the chair of ASEAN in 2022, visited Myanmar on 7-8 January 2022, meeting with Min Aung Hlaing, the Myanmar's military leader.

At a recent bilateral meeting, Myanmar's military leaders promised the Cambodian Prime Minister that they would stop firing on ethnic armed groups until the end of 2022. He also allowed special envoys to meet with stakeholders in Myanmar and facilitate humanitarian assistance for the Covid-19 vaccine to reach the people of Myanmar.
